President and Principal Self-Defence Instructor
Sanette Smit is the President and Chief Instructor of Stay Safe and the owner of South Africa’s leading self-defence training company, Self Defence Workshops.
She has an 8th Dan Black Belt in Karate, and is Chief Instructor for Funakoshi Karate, South Africa. She is also the winner of numerous awards, including the Shoprite Checkers/SABC 3 Woman of the Year Sport Category (1998); National KSA Coach of the Year Award (1998); Sport Legend Award, Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (2008); and Administrator of the Year, Western Province National Sports Council (2010).
She has been teaching women self-defence for more than 30 years and, in addition to her numerous karate qualifications, holds a Self-Defence, Empowerment & Martial Arts Trainer (SEMAT) Certificate from the Stellenbosch Sport Performance Institute, and a Self-Defence, Empowerment & Martial Arts Trainer (SEMAT) for Disabled Women & Men Diploma, from the Lydia Zijdel Foundation in the Netherlands.
Sanette is the author of The South African Women’s Guide to Self-Defence (Struik Publishers, 1999) and Karate – the Essential Guide to Mastering the Art (New Holland Publishers, 2001).
