Assistant Instructor
Chrislene Smith holds a Diploma in Programming (IT), a Diploma in Systems Analysis, and a Level 1 Gym Instructors Diploma.
She is a 4th Dan Black Belt in Karate and a Karate Instructor, and has served as a Self-Defence Instructor for Self-Defence Workshops cc for almost 15 years. In addition to her full-time career in systems analysis and programming for one of South Africa’s largest retailers, she works as a part-time Self-Defence Assistant Instructor on the Shoprite Stay Safe Women’s Roadshow workshops.

Media Coordinator and Self-Defence Assistant Instructor
Montsadi (better known as ‘Monty’) has a Diploma in International Business Communication and Journalism (Cape Town Academy) and a Diploma in Journalism for Print and Digital Media (City Varsity, Cape Town). She completed the Don Mackenzie – Advertising, Commercial and Fashion Photography Course, and has partially completed her BA in Communications.
She holds a 1st Dan Black Belt in Karate; works as sub-editor for the animal awareness magazine, Animal Voice; is News Anchor and Reporter for Heart 104.9 FM, and is currently Media Co-ordinator and Self-Defence Assistant Instructor for the Shoprite Stay Safe Women’s Roadshow.
Some of Monty’s past projects have included (but are not limited to) working as Junior Editor at Cosmopolitan Magazine; Events Co-ordination and Acting Events Manager for Cosmopolitan Magazine; Online Editor for website AllAfrica.com; Production Co-ordinator for an Independent African Film Company for World Refugee Day; and handled freelance Marketing and PR for the launch of Studio Vibrations.

Self-Defence Assistant Instructor
Ianthe has a National Diploma in Musical Theatre from the Tshwane University of Technology; a Comprehensive Teacher Training Certification for Pilates (CME) from Conscious Movement Education; Anatomy and Physiology Certificate (ETA), Exercise Teachers Academy Cape Town; Personal Training and Group Training Certificate (ETA); Exercise Teachers Academy Cape Town; and Advanced Education Pilates Certificate Course for Injuries and Pathologies (BASI), Body Arts and Science International.
She was a Principal Dancer at Richard Loring’s African Footprint; Event Co-ordinator, Eclectic Event Facilitators; National Events Manager for Cosmopolitan Magazine; National PR and Events Manager for Planet Fitness South Africa; CPR and First Aid Certificate, American Heart Association; Pilates Practitioner, Ianthe Basson Pilates and Somersault Studio.
In addition to running her own Pilates studio, she volunteers as a Self-Defence Assistant Instructor for the Shoprite Stay Safe Women’s Roadshow.

Treasurer and Self-Defence Assistant Instructor
Florence holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance and Economics) (UNISA) and has completed the Chartered Institute of Business Management (Management and Cost Accounting) (UNISA), Management Development Program (Marketing; Finance; Production; Logistics and Human Resources) (USB), as well as Exercise and Fitness Studies from the The Health Foundation (UCT).
Florence holds a 6th Dan Black Belt in Karate and is a Karate Instructor for Funakoshi Karate South Africa. She serves as a Tournament Co-ordinator for the Funakoshi National Championships and South Africa All Styles National Karate Championships. She was part of the UFAK Senior African Karate Championships LOC Organising Committee, has been General Secretary of the Karate Association of the Western Province and Funakoshi Karate South Africa, as well as Team Manager for the Karate Association of Western Province.
She is a Founder Member of the NPO “Hope 4 Kids” and was a FIFA World Cup 2010 Marketing Volunteer.
In addition to her organisational commitments, she is Assistant Instructor for the Shoprite Stay Safe Women’s Roadshow and serves as Treasurer and Assistant Instructor for the Stay Safe NPO.
President and Principal Self-Defence Instructor
Sanette Smit is the President and Chief Instructor of Stay Safe and the owner of South Africa’s leading self-defence training company, Self Defence Workshops.
She has an 8th Dan Black Belt in Karate, and is Chief Instructor for Funakoshi Karate, South Africa. She is also the winner of numerous awards, including the Shoprite Checkers/SABC 3 Woman of the Year Sport Category (1998); National KSA Coach of the Year Award (1998); Sport Legend Award, Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (2008); and Administrator of the Year, Western Province National Sports Council (2010).
She has been teaching women self-defence for more than 30 years and, in addition to her numerous karate qualifications, holds a Self-Defence, Empowerment & Martial Arts Trainer (SEMAT) Certificate from the Stellenbosch Sport Performance Institute, and a Self-Defence, Empowerment & Martial Arts Trainer (SEMAT) for Disabled Women & Men Diploma, from the Lydia Zijdel Foundation in the Netherlands.
Sanette is the author of The South African Women’s Guide to Self-Defence (Struik Publishers, 1999) and Karate – the Essential Guide to Mastering the Art (New Holland Publishers, 2001).

Programme Co-ordinator and Self-Defence Instructor
Margaret received an MA (cum laude) from the University of Stellenbosch and initially worked as Senior Museum Human Scientist and Assistant Director of the Stellenbosch Museum. After leaving the Museum, she worked as a Heritage Impact Assessor before joining Self-Defence Workshops, where she has remained for the past 15 years, serving as the Chief Administrator and a Self-Defence Instructor.
She is also Programme Co-ordinator and Self-Defence Instructor for the Shoprite Self-Defence Training programme for female learners in the Western Cape and is the Programme Co-ordinator and Self-Defence Instructor for the Shoprite Stay Safe Women’s Roadshow Project.
